Why this question gets asked so often
Among current Formula 1 drivers, Max Verstappen is the one most openly, seriously committed to sim racing as competition rather than as homework. He races online under the Team Redline banner, enters virtual endurance events that run for hours, and has been widely reported racing late into the night — including on real Grand Prix weekends. That is unusual. Most drivers treat a simulator as a tool their team books time on. He treats it as a second racing career.
So people search for Max Verstappen's sim racing setup assuming that if they copy the rig, they get some of the result. That is the wrong end of the problem, and this page is about the right end.
A note on what this page will not do
We do not review, recommend or sell hardware — no wheels, no pedals, no rigs, no cockpits. There are hundreds of pages that will, and most of them are affiliate listings dressed as advice. We also will not publish a confident spec sheet for another person's private equipment: those details change, get reported second-hand, and are the part of the answer that matters least anyway.
What is worth writing down is the part nobody sells you: what actually happens in the seat.
Max Verstappen simulator setup: what actually matters in it
Ask about the setup and you will get a parts list. The part that actually explains anything is what he does with it, and the useful detail there is the diet rather than the equipment. His sim racing is mostly long, competitive, multi-class endurance racing against other serious drivers — not hot-lapping alone against a clock. That distinction is everything:
- Traffic is constant. Multi-class racing means permanently arriving behind something slower and being caught by something faster. You spend the whole race judging closing speed and choosing where to commit.
- Stints are long. You cannot drive a two-hour stint the way you drive a qualifying lap. Managing a tyre for forty laps is a different skill from extracting one lap, and it is the skill that decides most real races.
- Mistakes are expensive. In an endurance race, one moment costs hours of work. That trains restraint in a way a five-lap sprint never does.
- It is genuinely competitive. The people on the other end are quick. Practice against weak opposition teaches you almost nothing.
What transfers to a real car — and what does not
Be honest about the limits. A simulator gives you no lateral load, no compression through a fast corner, no fear, and no sense of a car moving underneath you through the seat. Physical preparation, neck strength and the ability to keep making decisions at the end of a hot race are not trainable from an office chair. Nobody becomes a racing driver in a sim.
What does carry across is the mental furniture:
- Circuit knowledge. Braking references, kerb use, where a lap is actually won. Arriving somewhere already knowing the corner sequence is a real head start.
- Racecraft. Closing speed, positioning, when a move is on and when you are only going to ruin both races. This is the single most transferable thing, and it is exactly what endurance sim racing drills hardest.
- Tyre and fuel management. Understanding what a long stint does to a car, and how to spend a set of tyres deliberately.
- Feedback vocabulary. Learning to say precisely what a car is doing wrong is a professional skill, and a sim is a safe place to build the language for it.
- Racing under pressure. Repetition of close, meaningful wheel-to-wheel racing makes the situation itself feel ordinary.
The same split shows up in our model
This is not a coincidence: when we built the driver model behind these games, the eight ratings we ended up needing split along almost exactly that line. Racecraft, tyre management, consistency and feedback are the lanes a sim can genuinely build. The Max Verstappen sim rig question, answered honestly
The most common mistake is treating equipment as the entry fee. It is not. The habits that make someone quick are available immediately and cost nothing:
- Pick one circuit and stay there. Learning ten tracks badly is worse than learning one properly.
- Race people, not the clock. Time trial makes you smooth. Racing makes you a racer, and they are not the same thing.
- Run longer races than feels comfortable. Everything interesting — degradation, strategy, concentration — only appears after the first ten laps.
- Finish. The fastest way to improve is to stop throwing races away, and it is also the least fun advice anybody gives.
- Review one thing per session. One corner, one restart, one stop.
